Didn’t matter how long we waited The flood had not receded We checked the maps and surveys: Nowhere to go Some folks had started praying But it never finished raining Despite the years of planning Nothing to show The levies overflowed Supplies are running low We better hit the road Too many vices to forgive We’ll find another place to live Forty days upon the ocean Your company, the bosun Is suffering from starvation It’s time to row Succumbing to exhaustion You hear an apparition It’s there at the horizon A ray of hope The sun begins to set You see a silhouette A mountain top ahead
2.
Schools 02:24 video
Do you remember when we were young And we built this city on rock and roll But then we got old and the Scene stayed young and got into the band Life is so easy when you’re record’s hot But then 10 years on, they’ve all forgotten So we haunt the halls and we hug the walls And try not to disappear Fade in on a friday night And your favorite brand new band is playing You can’t tell how old they are But steady diet dropped before they were born You can’t get to the front When you can’t be seen or slip in between So you haunt the halls and you hug the walls And try not to disappear We’re at your shows, soaking up your oxygen Drinking your blood, climbing inside your skin Stealing your moves, filling another grave in
3.
Here in Richard Nixon’s safe room I think you’ll observe that The interior decorator Was a fan of silver spoons In Richard Nixon’s safe room The bed’s shaped like a race car There’s a box of pacifiers Which the president justified by Saying “there’s a girl that sleeps here That cries out in cypher She is not to be recorded ‘cause she is a russian spy” In Richard Nixon’s safe room He has his own Pac-Man machine And you won’t need a quarter Because the second player’s always free In Richard Nixon’s safe room You’re thirty meters underground There’s no one looking for you In Richard Nixon’s safe room
4.
Burn the city down Build a whole new town “..But somebody still lives there!” “Who cares?” Raze the public square Ashes everywhere “Let’s get a place nearby!” “Why?”
5.
We sat and we waited Discussed and debated And now we’re trapped beneath the sea We’re running out of air to breath The coax cable Could not be disabled The flow of news from day to day Is slowly driving us insane
6.
Room Service 01:51
They’re knocking on every door They want to come inside “They’re rounding up all the radios We need a place to hide.” This isn’t treason, we need a reason. They’re coming around again. They’re forcing their way in. They’re cleaning out your minibar The valet just crashed your car This isn’t treason, we need a reason A reason to occupy, a reason to occupy The party’s winding down Gunshots all over town They’re sinking down into their chairs “it’s not safe for us out there!” This is contrition, we need permission Permission to occupy, permission to occupy
7.
Pool Party 01:31
We’re in your yard Digging a hole to find out Just how far Beneath the earth’s required Hidden Scrolls The wisdom of the ancient Warriors Have lead us to this moment The battle for The ancient city of the Dinosaurs We won’t accept surrender Not before Your secrets are uncovered That is when We build the pool again We’ve broken through The oaken door Time to take up arms Time to go to war
8.
Consequences 02:45
“When you’re famous, You can do what you want” You are pinioned In the back of the car You’ve lost count of The number of days And how many Times you’ve heard him say, “There must be consequences Some form of recompense exchanged For all your great successes For every atom of your fame” Now your captor falls silent Presses the gun against your side Blue lights flash in the window As the ether’s applied “There must be consequences Some form of recompense exchanged For all your great successes For every atom of your fame”
9.
The rising water knocked you from your feet As you scrambled for higher ground The smoke was lingerin’ over 40 east So you made for the center of town There’s no knowing what you’ll find there You were out-of-state And you were feeling lonely Thought you’d relocate From the city, to the city What you couldn’t see Until you signed the papers Is that you’d always be From the city, in the city The Stahlman building was a welcome sight You would follow the neon sign You had no way to know the station moved In 1979 The sun is fading, you’re running out of time You were out-of-state And you were feeling lonely Thought you’d relocate From the city, to the city What you couldn’t see Until you signed the papers Is that you’d always be In the city
10.
You pause, engine idles At the corner of 10th and Main One cloud, and then another Touch down and head your way Two clouds, patient, follow. On foot and out of breath No safety, no shelter, You turn into their path A sense of lightness takes you The city looks so small from here Leave it behind, look to the skies And let the cyclone help you on your journey home Look to the skies And let the cyclone take you home

about

Nashville has always loomed large in the entirety of Tower Defense’s discography but In the City finds the Music City playing a larger role than ever. The full-length album contains ten tracks of finely tuned bombastic rock inspired maddening politicians, rapidly-gentrifying neighborhoods and even a fevered tornado dream.
